DOMAINE ROUX
Based in the village of St-Aubin, the Roux family own 70 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. The origins of Domaines Roux date back to 1885, and the current generation (brothers Sebastien and Mathieu) have propelled Domaines Roux forward as one of the leading quality oriented producers of Burgundy. This modern and forward-looking company sees its wines exported extensively to major wine markets throughout the world. Today, Domaines Roux is one of the 10 largest land-holders in Burgundy, putting this label in a unique position to control production and quality from the very beginning of the production cycle. The vineyards of Domaines Roux cover most of the best-known appellations – all the way up to Grand Crus – with their most extensive and appreciated holdings in the villages of St-Aubin, Pommard and Corton Charlemagne. Also of particular note, the vineyards of Domaine Roux are planted exclusively on the most sought-after south and south-east facing slopes of the various terroirs across they farm.

2009 ALOXE-CORTON 1er CRU “Les Valozières”
The wines of Aloxe-Corton offer some of the most profound values to be found anywhere in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or. Covering some 300 or acres, nearly 98% of the surface area of this region are classified as 1er Cru or Grand Cru – one of the highest percentages rewarded with these highest ratings of any of the villages of Burgundy. The deep, dark clay soils of Aloxe-Corton yield structured and concentrated wines, likely accounting for why such a high percentage of the wines grown here are red, with only a tiny proportion of whites grown in the area. Centred around the Grand Crus of Corton, Corton-Charlemagne and Charlemagne, tiny yields are coaxed from these special soils and ideal exposures. This 2009 red from Domaine Roux has a bit of bottle age and is today offering sublime drinking pleasure.

WITH FOOD
Fine aged red Burgundy, such as this 2009 Aloxe-Corton from Domaine Roux, is an ideal match next finer cuts of red meat like beef, lamb or milder game. This wine is also a lovely companion alongside medium flavoured firm and semi-firm cheeses, or with main dishes featuring earthy mushroom flavours, like risotto or pasta.

EXPERT OPINION
“Here’s a spectacular, gracefully evolving wine for true fans of classically styled red Burgundy. Layers of sour cherry, cranberry, raspberry, cedar bough, incense and beetroot set the stage aromatically. The palate shows good intensity and depth of flavour, with spicy, earthy notes joining bright red fruit. Elegant and expressive from first impression to tantalizingly long finish, it’s showing beautifully now and promises pleasure till 2025 and beyond. Pair with coq au vin, dijon-crusted roast ham, root vegetable ratatouille or semi-firm cheeses.”
