EXCELLENCE, HUMILITY, SUSTAINABILITY and RESPECT — THE ESSENCE OF DOMINIO BASCONCILLOS
DOMINIO BASCONCILLOS is an impressive family owned property located in Ribera Del Duero Designation of Origen, in Spain. For over 20 years, they have been pioneers in the development of sustainable viticulture at the highest altitude, and produce fine signature wines, both conventional and organic.
Dominio Basconcillos has an altitude of 3200 ft. above sea level. They are one of the largest vineyards operating at such a high altitude, not only in Spain, but in all of Europe.
Altitude produces wines with higher acidity and are more aromatic, with a significant phenolic load. Slow maturation in these conditions develops intense aromas and produces fine, elegant and fruity wines.
Dominio Basconcillos’s award-winning portfolio includes premium wines that feature exceptional craftsmanship, and international appeal — from their classic DO range of Viña Magna Roble, Crianza and Reserva, to their Dominio Basconcillos ecologic and the new release called “Finca de Altura” (translated “Estate at Height”). This is a contemporary expression of Tempranillo produced at high altitude.
The state of the art winery was designed in a French Château style, with all of their vineyards planted around the winery. Dominio Basconcillos’s bestow great attention to detail in the vineyard, at harvest and in their winemaking process. With limited productions, Dominio Basconcillos offers unique, international, authentic and exclusive signature wines.
A FAMILY WINERY, A SHARED VISION
A nature lover and a pioneer, José Maria Basconcillos has realized his dream of making excellent, iconic, classic, respectable and honest wines. He honours his family legacy which is marked by the desire to revere the beauty of nature, respect its slow pace and connect to our own essence, without haste and with the goal of enjoying our experiences.
Maria José and Carmen Basconcillos share their father’s vision and work to maintain the principles of the winery, enhancing the virtues of Dominio Basconcillo and its unique character through a legacy of knowledge of high-altitude viticulture, loyalty to their vineyards and their values.
Dominio Basconcillos is above all a family winery, with three generations enjoying and sharing a passion with a common goal: understanding the world of wine with responsibility, sensitivity and respect for the environment. The harmony with their environment is a result of care and integration with the landscape, which ensures that the winery blends completely into its surroundings, minimizing its environmental impact.
THE WINES OF DOMINIO BASCONCILLOS
Viña Magna Reserva 2016
“It’s worth a trip to Dominio de Basconcillos in Gumiel de Izán just for the view from one of Ribera’s highest sites. Marrying Tinto Fino with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, it’s a richly oaked, well-balanced cuvée from an excellent vintage, with less tannin and power than the 2015, a core of fresh acidity and flavours of cassis, black cherry and sweet vanilla spice. Drink date: 2023-2031.” Score: 95 Pts. – Tim Atkin, MW, timatkin.com, Ribera Special Report 2020/21.
