2014 PROTEA MERLOT
The Western Cape of South Africa, or the expanse of land surrounding the international city of Cape Town, first welcomed European grape vines planted to its soil with the arrival of Dutch settlers in the 17th century. Today, this region continues to produce complex, warm climate wines, with ripe, palate-pleasing flavours. The estate of the late Anthonij Rupert has been producing wine in the region for decades. The Protea line, bearing the name of South Africa’s national flower, features accessible wines with a strong sense of terroir. While the winery is located less than 100 kilometers due east of Cape Town, this Merlot sourced from a vineyard in the cooler coastal Darling region, north of the city.

EXPERT OPINION
“The fruit for this Merlot is grown in the Darling and Stellenbosch regions. Enticing red and dark fruit on the nose. Nicely weighted with ripe red berry flavours. Balanced and well made, this is crafted in a lean, Old World style. Long and concentrated finish. Enjoy with burgers or lamb kebabs.” (LCBO Vintages Tasting Panel)
