PRODUCER PROFILE:
Established in 2000, Bodegas Benegas has been crafting fine Argentine wines from its estate approximately 20 minutes outside of the City of Mendoza. These cellars, originally built in 1901, remain an important heritage building and today is home to more than 80 tanks, 1200 barrels and cellars that sit some 8 metres below ground level behind thick stone walls. And its in these cellars where Federico Benegas Lynch oversees the production of some of Argentina’s most impressive and delicious wines grown in their high elevation estate vineyards. This region is widely held to be Argentina’s fines terroir, producing rich, spicy and robust red wines that compare favourably with the finest Cabernet-based reds grown anywhere on the planet. Small lot winemaking, including harvest by hand, processing through two hand-sorting tables, extended cold soaking of juice on the skins, followed by a long and cool fermentation and finally extended slumber in the finest quality oak barrels, emphasizes minimal intervention and traditional winemaking protocols.
