PRODUCER PROFILE:
The vineyards of Juniper Estate date back to the early days of wine production in the Margaret River region of Australia – and the story of this important estate parallels the evolution of the Wilyabrup sub-appellation, widely celebrated as the epicenter for quality wine in Margaret River. Some 250+ km south of Perth, Juniper Estate was one of only 6 commercial vineyards in the region back in the early 70s, however today this region is home more than 200 wineries. The original plantings, from 1973, total some 21 acres comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Semillon, with an additional two acres of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec added in the late 1990s with the intention of enhancing the Cabernet Sauvignon into something of a classic “Bordeaux-style” blend. These estate vineyards remain dry-farmed, with all of the important viticultural management – like pruning and harvest – carried out by hand. Wines here at Juniper Estate are crafted with the utmost respect and care for preserving and showcasing this special terroir. Oak barrels are employed in a thoughtful and gentle manner, with the goal of bringing delicate complexity to the wines, rather than overwhelming them. The winemaking facilities are equipped with the best modern equipment and home to temperature controlled barrel cellars, following major renovations in 1999. Across the range, these are wines that deliver purity and precision, and are leading benchmark examples of the viticultural potential of the Margaret River appellation.
